— "Stewie's First Word"

Kevin Swanson (born in 1986) is the son of Joe and Bonnie Swanson. He’s also the older brother of Susie Swanson. He was Meg's primary love interest for the first few seasons of the show. He was sent to the war of Iraq in "Full Metal Jackass" and was presumed deceased in "Stew-Roids", until he miraculously came back in "Thanksgiving With The Griffins", revealing that he faked his death to escape the war. Since then, Kevin has been characterized as a shell-shocked veteran with PTSD.

Biography[]

Moving to Spooner Street[]

Kevin debuted when his family moved in, in "A Hero Sits Next Door", and quickly won the heart of Meg. Meg became his friend, but never had the guts to admit her feelings. Until then, Kevin would usually help her with homework and walk her to and from school. He'd only spend time with her when he wasn't with other friends, which was rare, but what really made him stand out in her life, was that he was the only boy who truly respected her enough to ward of her bullies. Kevin was a protective and chivalrous guardian, who'd stand up for Meg, when she was being bullied by Connie D'amico and other contemptuous classmates. With a friend as true and loyal as that, boyfriend or not, Meg could safely say that she was graced to have crossed paths with Kevin during their lives, and could truly take something away from having him around.

Though the friendship wasn't as strong, Kevin was also friends with Chris and Cleveland Junior's, given that they were the three young boys of their neighborhood, at least prior to Neil moving in. They would casually hang out and watch TV, play sports and talk, but Chris would often annoy Kevin with his stupidity. Kevin, being a very neat and collected person, would have his cleanliness interrupted by Chris' foolish and reckless behavior, triggering his O.C.D. Despite all of this, Kevin saw Chris as a well-respected friend and strangely, even showed him a bit more acclaim than he did for Meg. This was unnoticed by the show's characters and the show's writing, itself, but there was a subtle and unexplained bit of extra care, Kevin gave Chris. This would never be explained by the writers, so it can be said this was just an odd thing that happened with the plot and it shouldn't be looked into too hard.

Iraq[]

Around the show's third and fourth seasons, more in the fourth, Kevin's prominence in the series was spotty, to the point where they rarely used him anymore. Show creators Seth MacFarlane and David Zuckerman claimed that he hardly had any purpose in the show anymore, so his usefulness sort of faded out and they stopped using him. They decided among themselves that his only purpose was to be Meg's only friend (which would be replaced by Patty, Ruth, and Esther) and love interest to pin for, alongside the child of the Swanson family, which lost meaning once Joe and Bonnie broke off into their own independent character routes.

Because of that, they wrote him off in "Full Metal Jackass", with him getting accepted to fight in the Iraq war and bid his farewells. Leaving the recurring cast. Afterwards, he wouldn't get mentioned again until Season 5's "Love and Sabotage", when Bonnie got a letter from Kevin in Iraq wishing Bonnie a happy Mother's Day. And then had one more mention in Season 6's "Stew-Roids", when Joe casually reveals Kevin died in Iraq.

In Season 9's "Thanksgiving With The Griffins", Kevin astonishingly returned from the war, with him now aged by six years, claiming to have faked his own death, so he could escape. More into his draft was delved into. It was sent off, shortly after turning 18, his reason for faking death was the unjustified cop-out that he was scared to go on, after watching his friends, innocent Iraqis, and a distant cousin of a little boy die, his time in Iraq totaled six years, with one year, being his time, playing possum, and after being shipped out of war, he spent a year, travelling the world and simply "living life". It wasn't until after he was done, having fun, that he returned to his family, who was mourning over the one-year anniversary of his so-called passing, which happened to be on November 23rd.

In "7th Kevin", Kevin moved back into the Swanson House and tried to adjust to returning back to his normal life, but it was hard to be peaceful since he knew there was still a horrifying bloody war going on over in Iraq and nobody seemed to care. With members at the high school he went to when he gave a first-hand experience from the war being apathic. He also had PTSD and kept having freakouts, where he woke up from his nightmares about the war in Iraq.

In "Internal Affairs", Kevin witnessed his parents getting into a fight when Joe cheated on Bonnie with Nora as revenge for Bonnie cheating on Joe with François in "Foreign Affairs". However, since he was off at war during the events of the latter episode, he wasn't really caught up with what was going on.

Appearance[]

For the general appearance, Kevin Swanson is a Caucasian teenage/adult boy who is really strong and well-built, with a long face and brown hair. But his appearance depended on the season. In the first four seasons, before heading to Iraq, his hair was normal and he wore a green shirt (or dark red in some Season 3 and 4 episodes), light blue pants, and dark brown shoes. Upon returning to the military, Kevin received a redesign. His hair became a military crew-cut, and began to wear a white shirt, tan camouflage pants, a brown belt, tan military boots, and one of those weird necklaces a gray cards thingy on it that military people are always wearing.

In more recent seasons, Kevin's been seen wearing more normal clothing to showcase him mellowing out from his Iraq trauma. He now wears a black shirt with dark blue pants and black shoes, though still keeps his crew-cut hair from the military.

Personality[]

Kevin Swanson is a very mature, intelligent, and sporty teenage boy, who is at the top of his class and the heart throb of several girls in the school, including Meg Griffin. He is so strong and athletic, that he got accepted into the military to go fight the war in Iraq in "Full Metal Jackass". When he came back from the war in "Thanksgiving With The Griffins", he was a changed man. Now he was a toughened and hard-as-nails military veteran, who suffered from PTSD because of all of the shooting and explosions he had to witness.

Trivia[]

  • Kevin Swanson is the only major character, to have gone through an inter-episodic death fakeout (not counting the stuff with Brian getting hit by a car).
  • Kevin was originally going to be played by Jon Cryer, as revealed in the demo reels in The Freakin' Sweet Collection, but scheduling issues with his other shows lead to Seth taking Kevin's role.
  • When Kevin was first introduced, Chris makes the off-hand comment that Kevin was clearly gay to Meg, who was staring avidly at him from the kitchen window. Whether or not Chris' comment was done simply to make fun of Meg or a genuinely true observation, it was never revealed.
  • Coincidentally, he and his father both had accidents on national holidays. Kevin's would be dying on Thanksgiving and his dad would be getting crippled on Christmas, (as Joe mentioned losing his legs in a fight with The Grinch in "A Hero Sits Next Door")
    • Moreover, it'd be revealed both of Kevin and Joe's stories were false in "Thanksgiving With The Griffins" and "Joe's Revenge", respectively. Luckily for Kevin, his fatality was also false, while his stupid dad still has to roll around in a wheelchair.
  • Kevin Swanson was voiced by Seth MacFarlane from his debut to his write-off episode, "Full Metal Jackass". However, when he returned from the war a changed man, he was then voiced by Scott Grimes from then on.
    • Seth McFarlane briefly reprised his role of Kevin in "Customer of the Week" for a gag where all the characters voiced by Seth McFarlane said "Shut up, Mila". Even having him being in his original design he had when Seth voiced him.
  • Kevin has shown to be a content streamer in "Don't Fall in Love With a Streamer", which originally started out as a way for him to calm himself as advice from his therapist.
