Holden Caulfield is the main character from the book The Catcher in The Rye. He serves as a recurring character on Family Guy, where he's become a running gag in himself. Holden Caulfield's joke is that he randomly shows up out of nowhere and screams at people, who do fake stuff, calling them a "phony".

Biography[]

In "The Kiss Seen Around the World", Peter finds a self-playing piano at the dollar store and sets the song to a beautiful Mozart tune and pretends he's actually playing it as a joke. Holden Caulfield comes up and admires Peter's musical talent, but when Peter shows him that he was actually faking it, Holden gets mad and starts screaming like a ninny, repeatedly calling him a "phony".

When The Griffins leave the store, they find Holden, vandalizing their car, spray painting "Phony" on the side of it.

Neil tells Meg that when he was making suicide threats, he didn't actually mean them, Holden shows up and yells at him for faking a suicide attempt, calling him a phony.

At the end of the episode, Holden shows up one last time, standing outside of The Griffin House, screaming at random pedestrians, to say that a big fat phony lives there.

In "Good Ol' Fargy Love", the toxic chemicals that caused people to love each other finally clear up and Holden is shown to be with a girl. When Holden is restored back to normal, he realizes his love was fake and calls his girlfriend a phony. The girl tries to get Holden to keep loving him by showing him her tits but Holden notices they're implants and again, calls her a phony, before dumping her and leaving.

In "The Story On Page One", Holden gets mad at the news about Luke Perry being gay and calls it out for being fake, saying that whoever wrote that is a big fat phony. A teacher comes in and asks him what he's doing in a high school if he's a full-grown adult and threatens to call the cops if he doesn't leave. Holden yells at the so-called teacher, pointing out that he doesn't really work there.

In "To Love and Die in Dixie", when Sam reveals to Chris that "he" is actually a "she". Holden randomly shows up and calls her out for being a phony.

In "When You Wish Upon a Weinstein", when it's revealed that The Griffins aren't actually Jewish, Holden stands up and calls them out on being gentile phonies.

In "A Cheater Runs Through It", Lois tells Bonnie and Loretta about her believing he's cheating behind her back overseas at the House of Brews. Holden randomly comes to the girls out of nowhere and shouts about Peter being an even bigger phony than he thought. To which he's shooed off by Loretta, by her bitch slapping him until he leaves.

He later appeared in "Something, Something, Dark Side" as Admiral Ozzel, again using the "phony" line a scene before his death at the hands of Darth Vader, played by Stewie Griffin for coming out of light speed too early. The Fact-Ups special feature of the DVD acknowledges the fan name for him.

Glenn Quagmire likens Brian to the original literary Caulfield very negatively in "Jerome is the New Black".

"Holden" is cut for time from "Follow the Money", but he can be heard voicing his displeasure with the title card, calling it a "phony."

He has a crowd scene cameo and is identified as 'the phony guy' in "No Giggity, No Doubt".

When Meg tears the beard off a mall Santa Claus in sexual frustration in "Christmas is Coming", Holden is there to point out that he's a phony.

He is part of the crowd of protesters at the statue of town founder Pawtucket Pat in "Pawtucket Pat".

A child implied to be Holden's son appears in "The Candidate".
