— "Between Sanity and Madness"

Francis Howard Griffin (1928-2008) is the overarching antagonist of Family Guy. He was a stereotypical, bigoted Christian who was the stepfather of Peter Griffin and ex-husband of Thelma Griffin.

Biography[]

Conception & Birth[]

Francis was born on February 28, 1928. While his childhood is usual skipped over, there are some parts from his past that have been seen. He was raised by Josiah Griffin and an unnamed mother and was Christian since he was a child. Which resulted in him getting picked on for his beliefs to the point he openly tried to kill himself out of depression, which Josiah just shrugged off and abandoned him to go to the bar with his friends.

Meeting Thelma[]

In the early 60's, he met Thelma while performing for a show called Hope & Rape, a show about a model named Hope and a rapist named Rape sharing a city apartment as Rape struggles to control himself. While Thelma thinks of it as a funny thing to laugh about nowadays, Francis has shown active embarrassment over it, admitting he only did it because of him being low on money.

Becoming a Father[]

Around Peter's birth, Thelma showed Francis to Peter with the possibility of having him be passed off as Peter's biological father to not have Peter grow up without a father. Francis was completely against being one as he had to deal with a recent divorce and having custody over his and his ex's daughter Karen. Only objecting when Thelma mentions the idea of them being married.

Retirement/Divorced[]

In "Holy Crap", Francis was forced to retire from the Pawtucket Mill. He moved in with Peter's family short afterwards, but was a giant pain in the ass. After much struggling, The Pope would eventually hire him as a special assistant at the end of the episode and take him off their hands. However, it didn't seem to last long as Francis got his ass fired in "Between Sanity and Madness".

Later on, he met up with Thelma and the two went on a drunken binge in Las Vegas until the two betted the loan to their house in an attempt to win. So, with no other places to go, they went to Peter's to live with him again. The second stay ended being somehow even worse than last time. As now the family had to both deal with Francis' Fundamentalism and Thelma's smoking problems. Not to mention when Peter's bonding attempts got far more desperate and them to watch over the kids for a day, it ended with Francis and Chris getting arrested for committing arson and Meg getting left outside a casino while Thelma got wasted and gambled.

A fed-up Peter decided to put Francis and Thelma into the Quahog Acres retirement home. Despite some disagreement, fights, and some breaking of Peter, Francis alongside Thelma finally agreed to settle there. Finally getting Francis to settle into a retirement home.

Death[]

In "Peter's Two Dads", he was killed during Meg's 17th birthday party by Peter who, dressed as a clown, attempted to ride down the stairs on a unicycle, but fell off and landed on top of Francis, fatally crushing him.

Appearance[]

Francisgriffin-full

Francis is a thin man who stands at 5'8", the same height as Thelma, and weights 150 lbs. He has messy grey hair, small round eyes and a large pointy nose. His chin has a very large - even larger than Peter's- and is angled forward. He wears squared glasses which are very thin (which he originally had thicker glasses, but the pair was destroyed by Peter). For his normal appearance, he wears a yellow collared shirt with a maroon vest above it, and light brown pants with a black belt with a golden buckle hidden under his vest. He also has dark brown heel patent shoes.

A common joke from Francis is how pathetically lightless he is, as Peter has multiple times carried him by his collar without so much as a struggle.

Personality[]

Francis is the meaner, crueler parent of Peter. Playing the mean to Thelma's nice. Francis was more roped into being a parent and as such, takes it on with complete anger and was verbally abusive to Peter from a young age. Francis has shown extremely religious and honors Jesus, God and The Pope to at point unhealthy levels where he has shrines of them as revealed in "I Dream of Jesus", runs a cult and has weird urges to nail crosses on walls. And he's also shown to be extremely stubborn with his views. On the wedding day for Peter and Lois, he taped a sign saying: "To A Protestant Whore" underneath the "Just Married" sign on back of the limo. To a lesser extent he despised Lois for her German heritage and was angry at Peter for not marrying an "Irish rose". He also hit Brian with his Bible for questioning and mocking him. When the Pope was fine with Peter's interfaith marriage to Lois and tries to convince Francis to accept Peter's marriage, Francis deems the Pope to be an untrue Catholic as seen in "Holy Crap".

He's also shown to be a hypocrite in terms of both his son and his wife. Examples include "Power Over Peter", where he scolds Peter for drinking, yet reveals to drink himself in private. Or in "Love and Sabotage", where he reminds Thelma how she was neglectful to Peter in his youth by leaving him to go gambling, despite the fact he himself as was neglectful to Peter (and also abusive). Though he gets called out a lot for his hypocrisy.

Despite his stubbornness persona and sheer unpleasant attitude, he has shown to have a soft side. He has stated that while he may not like Peter, or approve of him and his life, he does sincerely love him with all his heart and stick by his decisions. And while at his worst Francis will treat his son and his family as an afterthought, Thelma always brings out the best in him. That of a slightly eccentric man that can be just as goofy as Peter at times. That side has been shown to Peter in "A Star is Born, Kind Of", when after he accepts his newfound obesity, he becomes far more chipper and jollier like his son until he loses it at the end of the episode.

Relationships[]

Family[]

  • Peter Griffin - His stepson. He's shown and told him multiple times that he hates him and as a result Peter hates him back. Though deep down both care about each other.
  • Karen Griffin - Karen is Francis daughter and they have a negative relationship because when she was bisexuality Francis kicked her out of the house because of this.
  • Thelma Griffin - One of his few relationships he cares about. Francis has shown to love Thelma despite his hate and Thelma loves him back too.
  • Lois Griffin - Lois and Francis have negative relationship he didn't want Peter marrying her because she wasn't Catholic about her heritage.
  • Chris Griffin - Chris is Francis second step=grandson and he loves his grandson.
  • Meg Griffin - Meg is Francis oldest Granddaughter and her he loves his stepgranddaughter.
  • Stewie Griffin - Stewie is youngest stepgrandson of Francis. Stewie and Francis have a good relationship with each other.
  • Brian Griffin - Brian and Francis have a bad relationship with each other, with Brian seeing Francis as a wackjob who crams his religion down others throats and Francis seeing Brian as an annoying dog.
  • Carter Pewterschmidt - Francis and Carter have a particular nasty relationship. While never interacted much, Francis and Carter has shown to most have a negative relationship, with Francis hating Carter for being a dick to his son (despite being the same way) and Carter hates Francis for his Fundament views.

Episode Appearances[]

Trivia[]

  • Francis has mentioned multiple times to have an arrest record and has been to jail way too much for he liked to admit. Though Peter kept a tally and revealed he went to jail around fifty times.
  • In "Power Over Peter", Francis owned a uniform for a baseball team in his closet, implying he was a baseball player. Which got confirmed in "Peter Griffin's All-Stars".
  • In the episode "Stu and Stewie's Excellent Adventure", Francis was seen in the audience at Chris' wedding. Since his death had officially happened, this is one of the first events to make that future's timeline null and void.
  • In "Family Guy: Live in Vegas", Peter told Francis that when he dies, the family will celebrate in the backyard and cremate Francis' body in a fire. Which got semi-proved true in "Peter's Two Dads", with the family (especially Peter) being overjoyed at his death and burning his body to make marshmallows.
  • Francis has been shown to have jaw issues, as episodes like "From Method to Madness" and "Not All Dogs Go to Heaven" show Francis' jaw break, with Thelma mentioning she clocked him in the jaw one time and had that problem since.
  • While Francis has made fun of Peter for being fat, he himself has temporarily been fat multiple times in episodes like "A Star is Born... Kind Of" and "Breadlosers"
  • Although Francis hated Lois for being a protestant, it is implied that Lois had converted to Catholicism, later in her life. In "Big Man on Hippocampus", Lois said she had a rosary, and in "Boys Do Cry", she was seen practicing Catholic sacraments.
  • In the episode "The Old Man and the Big C", it was revealed that he was a WWII veteran.
  • In "How Farg is Heaven?", Peter said that his father used to have cancer, which he treated with chemotherapy.
  • In the episode "Take My Wife", Peter gets hit on the head by a coconut and remembers that he was abused by his dad. There's no way this wasn't Francis.
    • It may be possible that this abuse from his dad is what fuels his abuse toward Meg Griffin.
    • In the episode "Peter's Sister", it was also revealed that he was abused by his sister, Karen Griffin, which directly caused Peter to abuse Meg.
  • In past flashbacks ("Don't Be a Dickens at Christmas" and "The (Not-So) Great Outdoors") and "Karma's a Bitch", Seth MacFarlane provides his voice to him due to his actor having passed away.
